The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson
5.0
"The people sitting at the dining room table this late winter night had chosen snow over cotton."
An epic recounting of an epic migration that changed the face of America. The Warmth of Other Suns is a phenomenal education and should be required reading. For everyone. Period. At times uncomfortable, infuriating, and devastating, this is nevertheless a story of hope, survival, and a belief in a better future.
Wilkerson's research is impeccable and the structure of her story provides remarkable insight into this extremely important but often overlooked movement in history. I will read this book again with glee to gain a deeper understanding of Ida Mae, George, and Robert's quests to escape the subhuman conditions of Jim Crow South and seek a sustainable life.
