Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson
5.0
I really loved this‼️‼️ It was such a beautifully written story filled with so much emotion and depth. The novel is told from a multi-generational perspective so it’s a lot of back and forth with the timeline. But it gave insight to how they’ve all had their fair share of struggle or hardship. While also exploring a common situation that brought them all together and how this person’s choices affected everyone around them.
I can’t really put this one into words because Woodson covered so much and although it was a quick read it gave you a lot to think about. This wasn’t something I’d typically read and I went into this not really knowing what to expect. But I was definitely left wanting more and wanting to know more but not in a bad way.
Out of all the characters Iris stuck out the most. Not because she was dealing with teen pregnancy but how she felt and dealt with being a teen mom after having the baby. She was so misguided and uneducated when it came to her body and the decisions she made.
I can sympathize with Iris a bit because at one point we were all teens and did things or behaved in ways that put us into bad situations we’d later learn from or regret. Then poor Aubrey was just as lost and confused as her.
