The Magician's Daughter by H.G. Parry

3.0

This book is out of my normal reading, but it is nice occasionally to deviate from my regular reading path to something lighter. It is not often (and maybe because I don't look for) that I find a YA or a fantasy book that I enjoy. That was not the case with this book. The Magician's Daughter is a delightful and very fun read! It did get drawn out a little too much somewhere in the middle and it could have done better if it was about 100 pages shorter, but the story was adventurous, heartwarming, and imaginative. There were certainly many delightful moments and also many dark moments that kept me on edge. I was invested in the characters and felt for them when they were in trouble. I normally have hard time suspending my disbelief in YA books, but again that was not the case here. I felt as if I was in their world, so the metamorphoses of the magicians didn't feel out of place or unbelievable. I thought that this book was lovely. I don't remember having anything too adult in it, so it might be even good for middle grade. I didn't see it as more mature than let's say Harry Potter (well, I have only read 1-3, got bored after that) or a book like A Pinch of Magic, which I didn't like much for middle grade. The Magician's Daughter was a refreshing reading break for me amongst all the serious and/or heartbreaking subjects I've been reading. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
