The Eyes Are the Best Part by Monika Kim

dark emotional medium-paced

"...and I roll it against the inside of my cheeks. It's strange feeling. The outside of the eyeball is fatty, almost jellylike, with a salty, fishy flavour. Underneath the gelatinous goop there's a hard white sphere that tastes like nothing."

A revenge psychological horror, slow cooked until it simmers and boils.
Do not expect fast paced horror, jump scare and murder, but instead expect a novel that brings us on a journey through the MC's life, with thoughts swirling about in her head, her dealing with issues of her dad leaving the family for another woman, her mom bringing home a white misogynistic boyfriend, friends issues and her college life.

I think honestly, the author did an amazing job in portraying issues bigger than murder, and that is: misogyny, racism, and Asian fetishisation
And it hit homes, a little too closely in fact, being the eldest daughter in an Asian family and all.

I could not say much more about this, as I cannot give away the plot, instead you'd have to enjoy the savoury taste this novel has, and let it seep in your psyche, and evaluate yourself.
I, myself was really satisfied with ending.

Oh, and if you are squeamish, bring a strong stomach to read this. But if you're used to reading grotesque stories, then this will be just another side dish for you to devour.
