Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver
5.0
This book felt holy.
I know myself, and I am not about to dedicate my life to subsistence farming. But, 10 years after the publication of this book, many of her “revelations” about agribusiness are no longer news to me (or to many Americans); I feel proud of and grateful for how locally we already invest and eat. Now, I live in Davis, CA and not southern Appalachia. It is almost too easy to be a locavore, here. All the more reason to revel in the bounty of our nearby valleys, and more seriously consider some raised beds in our future backyard.
Many reviews of this book called her “holier-than-thou” but I found her truly earnest, and almost precious in her delight and despair. You’ll have to let me know what you think when you’ve read it....and what you’re going to plant first.
