Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert

4.0

I don't think I hold this one in as high esteem as the first but also some of the things I'd want to be different to make it more comparable to Dune, I understand why they wouldn't have worked.

I do have a couple of qualms, namely not understanding points that I literally know have been explicitly explained, albeit in some metaphorical, jargon-heavy way (this may be more of a reflection of me than the book though but I found the first one relatively easy to interpret and theorised all over the place and I just struggled to do that with this one). Also, all characters that weren't Paul (save for maybe Alia) were only ever shown when they moved the plot forward, which makes sense but also left me wondering 'where the hell are they?'

On the whole though, I did enjoy it and think it's very clever and it also brought out some pretty strong emotions in me. While it doesn't feel like a whole book in some ways and it's very dreary, I have a lot of respect for it.
