Sound of Madness by Maria Luis

challenging dark tense medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

The plot went a little wonky about halfway through, the poetic declarations of love in the dialogue were overused, and some of the sex scenes felt more on par with the movie Top Secret! than fictional real life. The twist at the end came seemingly from nowhere. The timeline between injury and mobility felt way too short (again, I know, fiction). The side characters were more set dressing than actual characters.

While this book felt more rushed and incomplete compared to the first, it was still a decent read. I probably won't reread it for a long while, but it might be something I come back to as a quick palate cleanser.
