The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis

4.0

I keep reading books about deep, internalized trauma lately and I don't really know why my brain is gravitating toward them. Maybe it says something about me? This book is really dark and brutal. It's not for the faint of heart. It's graphic and violent and pretty much all the trigger warnings apply - abuse, pedophilia, animal death, sexual violence, to name a few. But it's darkly funny and the point of its darkness is to just make a point. A lot of it is really in your face and made me want to stop listening, but I'm sure that's entirely intentional. There were a lot of good discussions about feminism and female friendship and I liked the way relationships between women were handled. Some really solid messages in there and it was so clearly, refreshingly written by a woman. I think the pacing was a bit confusing and the ending was especially graphic (also unexpected for me but maybe I wasn't listening closely enough? I listened to it in 30 minute increments while driving to and from work) and sad. It was good but I'm not sure I would want to read this again. I'm giving it four stars but I'm not entirely sure about this rating because I've not really read anything so blatantly and intentionally off-putting before.
