The First Sister by Linden A. Lewis

5.0

This was my first book of 2022 and what a read it was! I am thoroughly enamored by this book. I honestly am having a hard time putting into words how I feel about it - I love it that much. The plot was super engaging and unique despite the author using some popular themes/tropes. I was impressed by how well the three different storylines were interwoven and how that I was not once confused. To me that just shows effective a story teller the author is.

The plot was so enthralling - I didn’t want to put the book down. (Read the synopsis, I think it did a wonderful job of condensing the whole thing) I was committed to seeing where this story was going to go. The twists that are revealed near the end of the book were phenomenal. I CANNOT wait to go back and reread the book to catch any hints that could have suggested things were different than they seemed. I thought the ending was perfect and a great jumping off point for the second book.

Also to go along with the plot - Lewis’ world building was superb. They went into enough detail where I felt the world was completely fleshed out and that Lewis could answer any and all questions about it. The lyrically descriptive but matter of fact quality to their writing was also something I found addictive. I just loved the way the environment and characters were described. They were detailed and vivid to the point I could imagine it in my head.

For the characters, wow. Just wow. I always have a character or two I have a gripe with or cannot connect to but the three main characters were sublime. Hiro has to be my favorite and I am THRILLED to be able to read more about their story. The character development was just right in this story; after building the backstories of each character, their choices going forward match up to how I imagined their personalities. Everything seemed valid and realistic to the story. All the characters are diverse and flawed. I could go on and on about all three but I don’t want to give ANY spoilers.

I really wish it didn’t have to end- but I’m on to the next one and I cannot wait for the third!
