Juice was my first foray into Tim Winton and it won't be my last. This was a remarkable novel. Winton's anger about the politicization of climate change burns. He shows a bleak world, but not a hopeless one. There is great world-building, although I would have liked more detail on the history. We're left to fill in some blanks. On this future, people adapt to the heat and the dust, moving underground when necessary, salvaging, trading, growing. But we're left to wonder, should we have to live in this world? Shouldn't we act now? Shouldn't we do something to prevent this? Shouldn't we leave a peaceful and habitable world? Because people remember. Rage at those responsible for the climate disaster persists for centuries, to the point of revenge. This novel begs us to consider our descendants. Especially if you're the bad guy.
