At the start of this book, Tisaanah (let’s call her Tis), is a slave stuck in a live she is working to buy her way out of. Having lost her family and her land, she is attempting a feat to legally buy her freedom. Things do not go as planned. Tis ends up in a far off land studying magic wielding from a reluctant teacher, Maxantarius (these names, ugh, he will henceforth be called Max). As stories often go, Tis and Max find themselves locked in an unlikely partnership in an attempt to achieve Tis’s dreams to essentially save the world… or at least the other slaves from where she came from.

There is much mystery and intrigue in this book and it clearly is the first of several (first in a trilogy). Though it gives you some information, you quickly understand you will need to devour all three books to gain the answers to your questions. The style and story are interesting and keep you engaged. The characters are well rounded with none being a truly good or evil person. I am curious to learn where this story will take us in the other books.
