I'm mostly rating this on the main story that takes up the most space in this volume. It is not groundbreaking or revolutionary, but it was a very sweet tale. The other shorter stories that made up the volume were a bit of a mixed bag, but the tone was consistent, dreamlike and wistful, tendrils of longing that start to creep up the sides of the page, and the stories end before we get a definitive happy conclusion. However, I think we can infer that (with the possible exception of the story Corrosion) the endings are meant to be pleasant and/or hopeful.
The design of the book, from the interstitial pages to end page design to the cover with glossy leaves and matte portraits of the characters, is beautiful, thoughtful and cohesive.
I suppose I can understand many people giving this a middling rating, expecting a longer more detailed story to fill the whole volume, but I found a lot to enjoy here and will likely revisit it in future.
