Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
4.0
I watched the (1997) movie last year for the first time after hearing so much (both good and bad) about it. I loved it so much that I watched it again the day after.
Decided to read the book as well... phew...
With the movie there are these gorgeous cinematic images. Dominique Swain is just incredible in her role as Lolita. The book strips that away. Reading everything from Humbert's POV is rough. It's sickening. I felt very uncomfortable at times.
The wording, the way it is written is probably one of the prettiest books I've read. So it's a weird feeling. You read these awful thoughts of a very perverted man but it's written so beautifully that you keep reading. A lot of words came to mind just like with the movie.
Reading it after the movie was a good choice for me. I saw the actors in their roles reading the book. But it wasn't an easy read. Especially as a parent thinking about how there are too many people out there like Humbert.
