An incredibly important read, especially now, with the rise of white nationalism and the deeming of DEI programs as racist. This Told in a series of well-researched essays, ranging from topics like medicine and music, democracy to traffic, and interspersed with poems, stories, and photos, the 1619 Project explores how the spectre of slavery still haunts every aspect of American life, and not just the lives of Black people.
For example, the traffic essay taught me that traffic jams can arise from racist policies of segregation and white flight. People in Atlanta's suburbs regularly vote down the expansion of its public transportation system, preventing movement between the city and the suburbs unless a person has a car. For them, sitting in a four hour traffic jam is worth it to maintain an ethically white neighbourhood.
The book reminds us that Black liberation would improve the lives of everyone in the country.
