"Then, without caution, lest the first bloom of the relation wither, he opened the gate to his amusing world. So long as they subscribed to it completely, their happiness was his preoccupation, but at the first flicker of doubt as to its all-inclusiveness he evaporated before their eyes, leaving little communicable memory of what he had said or done."
It is terribly difficult to feel any motivation to read about a protagonist who is so, so boring. Tender Is the Night continues to prove this idea, as it shifts from an uninteresting actress in Rosemary to an equally uninteresting psychiatrist in Dick Diver. What a slog this was to get through. Where is the Julia style reworking of this that focuses on Nicole's perspective throughout?
