Code Dependent: Living in the Shadow of AI by Madhumita Murgia

informative slow-paced

3.0

The title of this is kind of misleading. The book does talk about AI and it's impact in our every day life, but I feel like focusing each chapter in a different part of the world wasn't the best idea if the author really wanted people to understand the dangers of AI and how heavily it's relied on.

I know so many people who would read about the workers in Nairobi and think "well that's just Africa." And they'd think the same thing about surveillance in China. Because "that's just how China is" and the possibility of their own country doing something similar seems impossible. Maybe focusing on more than one country per chapter would get the point across better and make more people understand why widespread these issues actually are.

I also feel like 2024 was not the best year to publish this. There's nothing new in here. This books doesn't have any new information you can't get yourself. So many people are already aware. If this had been published a few years prior I feel like it would have a different feeling. But I felt like I was just reading things I already know about. And how repetitive this was at times didn't make matters any better.
