Adventurous and completely imaginative! I did have a hard time with the narrator of this one, it read like a 12-year old boy who is constantly trying to be clever. But at the end, I felt mostly won-over by this often overly silly and loquacious voice, at the very least it felt very original. The world building was cool, and I enjoyed the characters. We spent way too much time learning about the mechanics of cannonballs and spores, the middle felt pretty bloated to me, but ultimately it all worked for me. I wasn’t convinced at first, but this was a very solid fantasy and I’m feeling almost ready to try to read The Way of Kings… maybe
