note to self: improvement over the first book, but i still struggled with the narrative tone and energy. and while i found the supernatural elements interesting, the unfolding plot was just a series of aesthetic action without any real conviction or depth. i felt the same about the flimsy characters, though i did perk up whenever calla bloodied her sword...the 3 times. i'm just not the intended reader for this series, but i am grateful for the opportunity to read and review this arc.
