The Bridges of Madison County by Robert James Waller

5.0

I had to compose myself and think about this when I finished before even coming here to figure out what I want to say about this book.

First of all, I do not condone extra-marital affairs by what I'm going to say here. Just reading of these experiences of these people just gutted me and my heart feels so broken for them. Many people do not believe in love at first sight, but I AM a believer because I knew as soon as I met my husband that we were going to be together.

Francesca had no idea what was going to happen to her on that day; the day the long-haired man in the truck pulled into her driveway and asked for directions to a bridge. Likewise, Robert had no idea what he was getting into as he went on a photoshoot for National Geographic. Francesca had a family of her own which she loved dearly and yet had this yearning in her for someone that fulfilled a different part of her than what she was getting from her husband. This is their story.

I think this clearly speaks to the fact that EVERYONE needs to be sure to keep their relationships with their partner in the forefront and a priority because everyday life will get in the way. What's not kept tended to will spoil or become so mundane, one day you'll wake up and wonder what happened.

As well as a heartbreaking and tender story, Waller wrote with such care and description but not overly so. I could picture every movement, every scene. Excellent prose. I've become a prose snob this past year and this was chef's kiss!
