The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman

2.0

I have a hard time explaining this book. WWII is fascinating to me, and I enjoy reading about it from different points of view and from different countries involved. But this book was hard for me to read. Not due to content, but the way it was written. I wanted to read it like fiction, but it's not exactly a fiction. I didn't feel like there was a beginning, middle, or end, just a string of consciousness. It was based on her diaries, so I guess it really was just that, but that made it difficult to keep going - it didn't hold me attention like other books do. With that being said, I did appreciate all that they went through, and thought that Ackerman put in a lot of effort to the story. I just wish it had been more thought out when put together. I'll be interested to see how the movie sticks to the book.
