Only the Beautiful by Susan Meissner

Do you ever put a book down and pause a while because you love it so much you don’t want it to end?

That is what happened to me with this book. You know I normally read really fast, and I like to finish books in a day. But with this one, I just loved the story so much I would pause, set it down, pick up another book, and then come back to it. I just didn’t want it to end.

This book is my top read of the year and even though it’s early in the year – this one is going to be hard to beat out of that spot. Last year my top read was Take My Hand, and if you loved that book, you will love this one. They cover similar topics, but in different ways. This one was based out of California, and the forced sterilization of those housed in mental health facilities. I did some more research on the topic and found that eugenics laws were still on the books in some states until the 1970’s and there is evidence this was still occurring as recent as 10 years ago.

I loved how this book was written in two parts, the first from the prospective of Rosanne or Rosie, and the second from Helen, her unofficial Aunt and huge impact in her life. I was on the edge of my seat with this one as to whether or not we would get the happy ending we wanted. I wont spoil it for you, but the book did wrap up nicely and was well done. The writing on this one was beautiful and eloquent and the flow was wonderful. I can’t say enough nice things about this one.

Please see picture #2 for the synopsis on this one as I had a lot of feelings.

I urge you to grab a copy of this one April 18th.
