Royal Replicas by Michael Pierce
2.0
Short version:
It was fine. Just fine. I'm not reading the rest of the series.
Long version:
I found this book hovering in my Kindle library yesterday. I didn't remember when I bought it or what it was about but you know what? Why not. It's a new year and I'm trying to clear out my library to make room for books I'm actually excited about reading, so consider my time reading this book a little bit of "New Years cleaning". And while I don't exactly regret reading this book, I do have a few choice words.
First of all, some of this book is basically a direct rip off of the Selection series. Believe me, I've read more competition-based royalty romance than I'd like to admit, and these two are eerily similar. Royal Replicas is like if you took the Selection and combined it with the Hunger Games. Sounds amazing, right? Not exactly. Firstly, the character building was practically nonexistent and all the characters were pretty static. The main issue I had with this book, though, was the blatant disregard towards the "show don't tell" rule. Every action, every emotion, and every event is basically just explained in dialogue from one of the characters. When I read a sci-fi romance I want drama and emotion and passion and this book was giving me none of that. Victoria annoyed me immensely. She was supposed to be this strong heroine but she just wasn't. She sacrificed her own life for a guy she went on one, ONE date with. Usually I can look past that if there's some meaning behind it, but the romantic tension wasn't enough for me to overlook her stupidity. Kale was the worst character in the entire book. I probably would've hiked the book up a star if he was completely erased. Lastly, the ending twist was incredibly disappointing.
Positives: It only took me about 3 hours to read and the pages flew by. The second twist kept me on the edge of my seat and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Bethany and Piper were a fun dynamic, and I liked her attendant.
Bottom line: If you want a quick read that takes little to no effort, go for it. Personally I'd suggest The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton instead, but it's all up to your own personal preference.
