The Prize by Julie Garwood
5.0
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
4.5 out of 5 stars
“She couldn’t hate him, for that would be a sin. She could, however, make his life a living hell during the short time they spent together. Odd, but that plan cheered her.”
I was charmed by this novel!
The Prize fits squarely in the historical romance box, as a story between the Normans and the Saxons, with the tropes of enemies to lovers and forced marriage. The novel is not purely character driven; it has a well-planned and thrilling plot as well- moreso than the majority of historical romances I’ve read. So, even if you weren’t in it for the romance, you’d still find a lot here to like with the thrilling plot and richly-drawn historical setting.
In spite of being a pretty serious story, there’s quite a bit of lighthearted humor that sings throughout the novel. The pleasure the characters take in driving the other crazy had its charming moments.
The book felt long at times, but I also think that may be due to Julie Garwood being more of a “classic” author, and me being accustomed to the more rapid fire pace of the latest contemporary novels.
The Prize would definitely be a great starter book for anyone looking to read historical romance for the first time. It has broadly palatable characters and plot. I found it a pleasure to read.
