This review is not spoiler free, I have blacked out major spoilers but small smoilers are still visible.
I absolutely loved this book! This was my second read of this book and having read my previous review for a different edition, it made a lot more sense to me from the start. I do wosh we'd gotten to know Syenite a little better as well as Essun before Uche.
The story was gripping and I didn't want to put it down but life had to come first.
It has been a few years since I read this book last and I didn't remember much about it at all or why I never continued with the series back then - thats why I read my previous review, not that it told me anything about why I never continued, it sounded like I wanted to.
I am very anxious to continue the series and see if our main character can find her husband and daughter, it is a worrying stoyline because I fear for Nassun. The best part of the three timelines was getting to know each version of the character, Damaya was a lonely child, but Syenite was a willfil adult, I don't remember if it specificied her age or Essuns, but Essun was entirely different to her previous identities.
Tonkee/Binof wasn't a shock but it was unexpected, she/they got an explanation in but I'm still curious how she deducted about the obelisks and tracking them.
Hoa was unknown, I did think Stone Eater but also was confused since he was eating and moved unlike the Stone Eaters. I am curious to know is 'he' is the embodiment of the obelisk, because the end of the last chapter sure sounded like the obelisk was sentient and Hoa admitted to liking Essun and wanting her to like 'him'. it is a conundrum I can't wait to figure out.
I am also very intrigued about Alabaster... He's turning to stone... How? Why? It is because he's using the obelisk power? Is Antimony the embodiment of a different obelisk? Can Essun use the obelisk power properly? Alabaster mentioned the moon... Is he implying that Essun can harness the obelisk power to connect to the moon and bring it down to earth to help destroy it? so very many questions that I hope will at least be explored if not answered in the next book. I can't wait to see if Essun does what Alabaster asked of her, and what that will mean for our main character.
