I went into this expecting it to be like past Ishiguro novels I've read - slightly dystopian worlds with a subtle twist at the end with some big revelation about human nature - and didn't read the blurb of this which definitely threw me off a bit. It didn't have much of a typical exciting storyline but rather was just about the relationship between Etsuko and Sachiko and Mariko.
Around the end, I was wondering if Etsuko and Sachiko were the same person since their circumstances were so similar, and I had kept wondering what had happenned to Etsuko that she was living in Britain and left Jiro. A little bit of an unreliable narrator which was interesting and I think I would definitely need a reread to fully understand and appreciate it.
You really need to contemplate it to understand it, and I don't think I'm in the right head space at the moment to do that. This wasn't really up my alley and even with the new context to keep in mind, I'm not sure that I would enjoy it.
