This is like the Wenren È (mc) breaking the fourth wall.
1. The plot was very engaging. I thought the beginning was good enough, but it only got better and better at every turn of the page. All the plot holes that there were in the beginning was uncovered by Wenren È. The pacing was well done, and I felt like every scene was where it should be, to reveal the characters' complexities, and to move the plot forward.
2. THE CHARACTERS!! Aside from the main character and the main lead, the side characters are so well done! Each has their own complexities and feels so solid.
Zhongli Qian, I thought at first he was just going to be a side character to be forgotten after a few chapters, but he proved that there's much more to him and I ended up being fond of him as well.
3. The female characters in the novel are bad asses and I loved them!
Baili Qingmiao, although she was a little bit dense and love sick in the beginning, but she pulled through.
Shu Yanyan, she's such a smart and unapologetic badass, you will never see her as a villain, but love her for being the realest.
Qiu Congxue, dense and blunt, but still awesome, and funny.
4. The romance. Ahhh, the slow burn, the angst, but so worth it. Actually the romance takes a second place in the novel until at least half of the novel.
The transition between This Venerable - This Subordinate was beautifully done, a slow realisation from Wenren È's part, that he had always loved Yin Hanjiang, and came to understand it as he unravels the plot,
But now he felt less comfortable about leaving Yin Hanjiang alone. When Wenren È wanted to go somewhere, since when had he paid attention to how dejected Yin Hanjiang looked? And since when had it softened his heart?
and Yin Hanjiang's realisation that he need not hide himself for who he is to be worthy of Wenren È's love.
"..Whether it's the reserved Yin Hanjiang, or the reckless and carefree Yin Hanjiang, this Venerable will love them both. Yin Hanjiang is Yin Hanjiang. He need not hide himself".
5. Yin Hanjiang, from being a yes man, the sword to Wenren È, the most loyal subordinate (more like a puppet) managed to overcome his inner demons and developed his own individuality, speaking his mind, all the while maintaining his love for Wenren È. I loved that for him. Yin Hanjiang is the character I loved most in the book, so his character development was such a pleasant thing to see.
He went from
What was the vanguard without his general? What was Alkaid without Polis?
to
At the last moment before daybreak, Polis and Alkaid shone brilliantly, reinforcing each other.
All I can say is that this novel is such an underated gem, if you haven't picked this up, go do it now.
