This is a book that I am probably the specific target audience for. It takes place in 1996-7, from the perspective of an unnamed narrator who is floating through life while attending Columbia for an MFA. I graduated high school in 1996 and applied to several MFA programs one year, thinking maybe I had a novel or three in me. I mean, I might still, but I definitely don't want to sit in fluorescent lighted classrooms to hear why I shouldn't bother; and pay for that privilege.
There were multiple passages that hit me right in the "Oh yeah, I remember that" but I simultaneously know that not many people would/do, and unless you're a mid to late Gen-Xer with literary aspirations (overt or latent), this would be kind of a damp squib.
I liked it, and can think of a couple of other people who might also enjoy it, but this isn't the most widely recommendable book. It read like the wind, though, and I'm curious to try something else by this author now.
