Big Friendship: How We Keep Each Other Close by Ann Friedman, Aminatou Sow
5.0
While I was already a big fan of this friendship duo, I don't think you have to know about them to find this book incredibly valuable. For years, I have been looking for nonfiction that values friendship in the same way I do and doesn't slop gross gender norms on top of it and ask questions like "can men and women be friends?" that undermine its true essence. Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman approach the subject of friendship through the lens of their own wholehearted and complicated friendship--one that led them to being co-hosts of the wonderful Call Your Girlfriend podcast--and share the intimate details of struggling through a friendship and figuring out how to repair it. Their story is laced with real-deal social science on communication, health, and social dynamics related to friendship. And there is an excellent chapter on interracial friendships that fits squarely into the discussions we are currently having about racism and white supremacy. This book was more of a challenging read than I anticipated in the sense that while telling one friendship pair's story, it holds a mirror up to the reader in sometimes uncomfortable yet necessary ways. But it also made me feel seen and understood in a way that no other relationship books have. I have been looking for a book like this one, and I want to give it to every one of my close friends. Do yourself a favor and read this book.
