This was kinda cute and pretty chill. I liked that it didn’t immediately delve into all-consuming attraction; it felt refreshing and realistic in the first “getting to know each other” stages. However, I wish there was more emotional build up and passion as the story progresses. Especially coming from Jas. She seemed indifferent a lot of the time. When they were apart, which was a lot throughout the book, she barely thought of Alex. I think her detachment is supposed to be due to Jas being scared to go into a relationship. But there’s not much in the story that explains/explores that.
I also feel like Alex had unfulfilled potential as a book boyfriend. He was flirty when interacting with Jas, but we didn’t get his pov and Jas didn’t give as good as she got imo. So I wasn’t sold on their chemistry and love for each other. I wish she had matched his energy more. I would have liked to see more interactions, more conversation and banter.
Jas sometimes came across as awkward or like she was giving attitude, but it wasn’t turned into a cute moment or something. It kind of just hung there.
I did like that the story focuses on Jas feeling lost and unsure about her passions and the future. She is in a very relatable rut. I feel like her figuring out what to do next and helping her parents improve sales took up most of the book rather than her falling in love with Alex, which is not a bad thing. However, since the book is under “romance” I went in expecting more romance than I got. Maybe the author should have gone all in with the figuring life out/immigrant family dynamics plot and marketed the book under a different genre.
All in all, it was a decent read but I don’t feel strongly about it either way.
