Poor Things by Alasdair Gray

2.0

First DNF of the year!

I can’t bear the inherent predation of this narrative. Whether there’s a lesson or some sort of satire to it, which I hope is the point, the disturbing “male gaze” for a lack of better words and “born sexy yesterday” trope takes away from what really is an interesting concept and set of characters/circumstances. Makes it disturbing in a way that detracts from my ability to actually sit with the material and want to read further.

I am not averse to sex nor think sex needs to be omitted from media, or even SA and other violences, but it all needs to be approached with care which from where I’m sitting this book does not. Beautiful writing and, again, an amazing concept which falls flat for me because the focus seems to central on the weirdo men’s fantasizing of Bella and that’s just not my cup of tea! Maybe I’m missing out and should’ve read more, but I D C!
