The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

5.0

Wowza! Hard to review this book without giving much away, but suffice to say that I came up with dozens of theories throughout the book, and I was wrong about every single one of them. I kept thinking I’d somehow managed to outsmart the book, and that was cocky of me. Kudos to the author for weaving such an intricate story that twists and turns and never gives you a minute to breathe or put the puzzle pieces together. Every character feels unreliable, and you question every character’s motives, which makes it so hard to figure out what’s going on. I truly couldn’t put this book away. I’m really not much of a thriller person, but this caught my attention from the very beginning, because it was the sort of thing that feels plausible in some way. I also have always found psychiatry fascinating (I was a psych major in college and briefly debated getting a PhD in clinical psychology), and was very into the depiction of life at the Grove and the way they handled administering treatment to the patients. Alicia as a character is absolutely fascinating, Theo is fascinating, everyone is fascinating. This is likely the best book I’ve read all year, and potentially one of the best books I’ve ever read.
