Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid

This was a phenomenal book. I was truly impressed by how layered it was. It really delves into the different kinds of racism and how subtle they can be, and how they can be just as harmful as overt forms of racism. Emira, the main character, is strong and relatable, as she navigates being in her 20s and trying to figure out what to do with her life. The book starts out with a sadly recognizable incident; a security guard in a grocery store assumes that she must have kidnapped the toddler that she babysits. But the book doesn't go anywhere that I thought it would, which was refreshing. Throughout the book, Emira interacts with many people whose intentions are potentially good, but they do and say things that are subtly racist. It was interesting for me to read as a white person and think about the subconscious things I do that are probably racist in some way. The book took many twists and turns that I didn't expect, but that also felt very authentic to the characters and made a lot of sense. A very timely and interesting book.
