I got interested in this from watching the tv series. There are some major differences (one is that Tulip is way cooler on the tv show) but the basic story tracks. Reminds me in some ways of Philip Pullman's Golden Compass trilogy - god is no hero and has gone missing. A good read and a good companion to the tv show.
