Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling
5.0
Easily the 5th time re-reading. It's the book I've re-read the least because it's such a traumatic book for the reader as well as for Harry. It's crazy how I still ugly-cry my way through the last two chapters, and really I started crying about 3/4 of the way through. J.K.'s build-up is beautiful, and re-reading it you really see the nuggets that develop and knowing the 7th book gives you that fresh perspective.
My favorite chapter is Chapter 23 "Horcruxes" because it illuminates Harry/Dumbledore's relationship so well. Harry finally understands his place in the prophecy and how Voldemort operated to create a self-fulfilling prophecy. There are great quotes in the book from Dumbledore about death and life and love and it just made my heart hurt reading his words of wisdom to Harry. And Snape...god where to begin. I could read the whole series from his perspective if J.K. would write them. I love postulating about his motives 90% of the time. But in this book (having read the 7th) you can see how his relationship with Dumbledore is also one that fulfills Rowling's theme of love being the conquerer of evil. I don't know what we did to deserve J.K. Rowling, but I'm so grateful for these books.
