This was a gorgeously written book and a fantastic retelling of the tale of Circe, weaving together her different appearances throughout Greek mythology to tell one cohesive story that was incredibly readable or, in my case, easy to listen to.

Yet, I think I had heard too much about the feminist nature of this book and was expecting a feminist retelling, and I don't think this book delivered on that. Circe read like the "not like most girls" trope, and I don't think her thoughts on other women really ever improved, and I am at a point in my life where that is frustrating rather than appealing. Circe never once really attempted to form a relationship with the women around her but was upset and then vengeful when they didn't have positive feelings about her in return. She was repeatedly willing to earn the respect of men yet did not put in the same effort for other women.

I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't gone into this book expecting something different. However, Circe was a very disappointing character from a feminist perspective.
