The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson

5.0

A great big 'thank you' to whichever of my friends recommended this when I asked for something about the Great Migration, the movement of ca. six million African-Americans from South to North between about 1915 and the year of my birth, 1970. The book is a masterpiece of erudition, human feeling, and good writing. Wilkerson threads the lives of three Migrants through the much larger narrative, to great effect.

I wouldn't be able to do it justice if I tried, so I will just say that if you are the least bit curious about the African-American experience or 20th century America, add this one to your list. It's a keeper.
