A lot of people are talking about this book now because of the LA fires that occurred at around the same time as in the book, but that wasn't the most interesting parallel to me. It was the descent into authoritarianism, the ineffectiveness and brutality of the police and the state, and the lack of empathy to the point that having it becomes a curse. Remember, you have a superpower. It's called empathy. We can't lose that.
