The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemisin
4.0
A brilliant continuation of what is set up in the Fifth Season, but it definitely feels like it's a bridge between the first and last books without having that much real substance of its own. It introduces a lot of very likeable and interesting characters, and develops the 'magic' system in a really fun way, but it doesn't feel like there's any plot resolution at all in this book. The middle book of a trilogy is obviously going to leave a lot hanging, but I still want SOME sense of resolution.
In the first book, I was a bit confused by the use of the second-person perspective. I didn't think it really added anything. But it's purpose was a lot more noticeable and impactful in this, so I'm very excited to see how much more Jemisin develops that concept in the final book.
