Haunt Sweet Home by Sarah Pinsker
4.0
I love Pinsker’s work, though I must say this isn’t a fave. I just don’t really care about reality TV (or the like) sets and backstage stuff in general, I don’t know, it just doesn’t hold my attention as much. Plus, this wasn’t as much of a haunting as I thought it would be, especially haunted house, though I did like the ending and the haunting idea. Ultimately this is more a character study than anything else, and I think would have benefitted more for being advertised as such. Many will hate the MC—she’s aimless, self-hating, both anti-social and craves validation and appreciation at the same time. I think she’s layered and, to my great annoyance, deeply familiar, and that’s what I’m rewarding with an extra star. This hit a little bit too close to home so I have to give it to the author. I also liked how it explored somewhat how the perception we have of ourselves colours how we THINK others see us and feel about us while we simultaneously think we’re being objective/right.
