Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson
5.0
After feeling disappointed from secret project number 2, secret project number 3 is a (highly) work of art
At the heart of it, this is a romance novel, but I can assure you that you will find it hard not to fall in love with these characters and this story. This definitely has the Brandon Sanderson flare in terms of the fantastical world and unique magic system and I was fully engrossed the whole time
This was such a wonderful story and every so often I got a sense that some of the concepts derived from personal experiences and it just made it that more magical. It encapsulates what it is to be human, the connections we make, even when the odds are against us, and how machines and technology are taking away from the talent and skills that humans have managed to develop
The references to the Cosmere were appreciated but you could definitely read this without reading his other works. The story is also inspired by Final Fantasy X and Your Name (one of my favourite movies) but it was differentiated enough that it stood out on its own but still managed to give off those vibes
The ending has left me with all the feels, even when I thought it was going to go in a different direction, and this is up there as one of my favourite books written by Brandon Sanderson. I think if more romance books were written this way, I’d definitely be picking them up
