My Darling Dreadful Thing by Johanna van Veen

4.0

Creepy. Loving. Gothic. Ghostly. Sapphic. Post WWII. Haunting. Obsession.

All can describe this atmospheric tale of love and haunting in 1950’s Netherlands.

Roos is haunted by a long-dead spirit she has named Ruth. She “works” for her Mama participating in scam seances. Mama is abusive and neglectful and just a horrible human being.

During one of these seances, a young widow named Agnes sees something in Roos that she recognizes in herself. A haunted woman.

Agnes bargains with Mama and takes Roos with her to her dead husband’s estate where her sister-in-law is a living haunted woman herself.

There’s mystery upon creepy mystery. This is such a great, chilling sort of story. Perfect for this time of year. I gobbled this up.
