Niño Bughaw by CJ Reynaldo

5.0

Nino Bughaw is a graphic novel following a young engkanto who was born deaf and has the power to control the weather.

I bought this copy in PICOF2024 and had the chance to meet the author himself who was accomodating in my request to sign my copy.

Art style? I have no words, masterful technique in incorporating the presence and absence of colors with what’s happening with Nino and the weather engkantos. The art style is distinct and I love how the character design are Filipino-coded.

Storyline, I always enjoy books that involve myth and lore and in this one we follow a story involving weather engkantos and their battle against the evil Sigwawa. Within 200 pages, CJ Reynaldo squeezed the story of Nino Bughaw being the chosen one, how his disability became something that separated him from his community, and how he ended the story by saving his kababayans.

The ending was well-wrapped but I hope there will be more volumes for this book since this is an amazing piece of work that can be recommended to Filipinos from all walks of life.
