The premise of this book seems tailor made for me. I adore books that surround food and use food, consumption, and eating as a main theme. Like many others, I think I was expecting something more fast-paced and thrilling, but this book leans more literary. The bones of this book and the mystery surrounding an alleged serial killer and the journalist who uses her obsession with food to get closer to her was so interesting and could have been so good, but it was just way too long and I struggled with the pacing and repetitiveness. I wanted it to be over so badly but it did keep me reading to find out what happened, so I guess that says something. The payoff of the mystery and the emotional payoff of the main character’s journey didn’t feel like it justified how long this book is.

Doing an immersion read with the audiobook and physical book at the same time helped me a lot in keeping my attention on the book, especially in its slowest moments. The narrator was great with the material she had.
