Before I Let You Go by Kelly Rimmer

5.0

"She is not a junkie. She is my sister." Annie, pregnant, sick and in need of medical attention calls Lexie, her doting older sister for help in the middle of the night. Annie has been struggling with her heroin addiction for many years and Lexie has always been there trying to help her get her life together. This was an incredible story about addiction, family secrets and trauma. It was a very moving story about how trauma can make or break you, as well as your family. There were so many points in the story that I found myself crying, struggling to catch my breath and with my heart heavy and breaking. But there were also times when I was angry and frustated. I was invested in Annie and Lexie and the love they had for one another as sisters. I greatly appreciated how the author shed light on the fact that people struggling with addiction are humans just like us with families, friends, hopes and dreams. This is one those stories that stays with you forever. I am a better person for reading it. I felt such a range of emotions with each chapter. Rimmer does a fantastic job of giving depth to each character and painting the scenes so vividly. I felt like I was right there with the characters. One minute my heart was breaking and the next I felt the glimmers of hope. This book was simply amazing and is a must read.
