Regretting You by Colleen Hoover
4.0
The writing in this book does a great job of making you care about the characters. I was invested in their wellbeing and rooting for all of them to figure things out, together. It was frustrating to follow the dramatic irony of nearly every chapter, but in a good way because it means that literary device was executed well.
The disconnect between Morgan and Clara is devastating to watch, as their relationship throughout the book is built on misunderstanding and miscommunication. I could feel the frustration from both sides. I enjoyed the POV changes, but admit I enjoyed Morgan's a bit more. There's no doubt about it that she was the clear adult in this story, and the POV reflects that. I admire her character's strength in difficult circumstances. Clara's POV was stereotypically "teenager-y" at various points, and while it wasn't terrible, I don't often enjoy a teenager perspective I think is tacky (or at least in the case of this novel, only tacky in some moments, but generally alright overall). In other words, I don't enjoy teenagers making decidedly poor choices because "they're teenagers and that's what teenagers do."
In all, I really enjoyed the book. The story progressed naturally and the characters were well written. Some of the plot points weren't a slam-dunk for me, which is why this isn't 5 stars, but overall I think it was well done.
