You can really feel the love and work Fonda Lee has put into this last instalment.
Everything she writes is so intentional, everything has purpose and meaning. So much so that every time even the smallest details are mentioned are incredibly important.  She has a way of writing important scenes where you think they are going to end badly, then something happens to make it seem like everything is going to okay, then something even worse happens.
I was not expecting the large time skips in this last novel, we cover over 2 decades worth of time after the events of Jade war. To be honest I don’t always love time skips because they are usually not well done and can pull me out of the story. However these long time skips and just the two decades were needed to fully flesh out the full scale of plot, politics and character development.
I could feel the hatred, pain, resentment and love in these characters. I felt like was fully experiencing these emotions with the characters.  Not only that but having so many POVs and each having such distinct voices is amazing.
You can also see and feel as each character develops.
Especially with the Kaul family, you watch each them go through so many hardships, tough decisions and terrible consequences that nearly break the characters. But you also get to see them build each other back up again with hope and love and understanding, even if they don’t forgive each other right away.
This fantasy world feels so real and raw, it honestly feels like your following real life events and a real family.
I have nothing but respect for Fonda Lee and the story she has created.
