We Are the Dead by Mike Shackle
5.0
Well this was bloody brilliant and quite literally too
I've never come across a world where I'm almost, I said almost, quite happy to live in the one we do and that's saying an awful lot. This place is unforgiving and relentless but this is what makes this book so good. This is not for the feint of heart
The pacing is consistently fast throughout and by that I mean it's non-stop brutality from start to finish. The story is told over 8 days and an awful lot of life changing events happen that I nearly booked myself in for a few therapy sessions on behalf of all these characters
It follows a handful of POVs and showing any signs of weakness is definitely not a good idea, even when placed in some really quite difficult situations. No one felt safe. The characters either know this already or very quickly learn to adapt in order to survive but some decisions were made with certain intentions and you could feel a little softness creep through every now and again
This is definitely an underrated book, it had an engaging plot with interesting fantastical elements but I now need to mentally prepare for more anticipated trauma in book 2
