He’s So Not My Valentine by Susannah Scott is a sweet contemporary romance that I absolutely adored. This story is the sequel to Scott’s A Not So Fictional Fall, part of the acclaimed Sweater Weather series. I wholeheartedly loved every second of A Not So Fictional Fall, so it was a no-brainer that I would enjoy He’s So Not My Valentine. And I truly did. I loved being back in Harvest Hollow with Pierre and Tasha, Heather and her precocious 8-year-old son, Nate, and the ever-dashing and totally charming Rene.
My favorite aspect to this Contemporary Romance is Heather and Rene’s extremely mature take on friendship and romance. From page one, Rene is exceptionally supportive of Heather and all of her baggage (and there is quite a bit of baggage). Rene is uber handsome and flirty and smart and capable, but the sexiest thing about Rene is his attention to detail. Rene sees Heather. He sees when she needs an extra set of hands and steps in to be those hands, he sees when she needs a compliment to gird her through a tough spot and happily gives that compliment, and he sees when she needs a little softness and never strays from an opportunity to bring that softness to her life. Rene is a true Romantic Hero. What I appreciate the most about Heather and Rene’s relationship is how honest and upfront and communicative they are with one another. This is not your typical Contemporary Romance where the main characters hold back information until the very last act of the story (I really hate when characters do that, to be honest). No…Heather and Rene talk about EVERYTHING! It is so refreshing. Neither Heather nor Rene hide that they have immediate chemistry and feelings for one another, so they talk about that. How surprising these feelings are, how real these feeling feel, and all the BIG issues these feelings bring. It’s really not practical for Heather or Rene to be in a long-distance relationship, so they agree to just be friends. Friends who refuse to hide anything from one another. And I loved every single second of their friendship.
Do Heather and Rene figure out a way to be more than friends in He’s So Not My Valentine? Well, you’ll just have to pick up a copy of this delightfully romantic story to find out. But I will say, the journey from friendship to possibly more is 100% well worth taking. I loved these characters so much and I am so sad my time with them is up. If you’re a fan of wonderfully engaging, well-written Contemporary Romance stories, then this book is the book for you!
