3.5

The star of the book was Kitty and her story, which explored racism, colourism, and sexism during the Civil Rights Movement. Kitty tries to maintain her identity while giving up many parts of herself.

The story is told in a dual timeline, and while the modern day events helped tie things together, this storyline and its characters felt underdeveloped and tacked on. The ending also felt unbelievable.
