Rouge by Mona Awad

4.0

Another novel I read with a centered theme on insecurities. This one with the added themes of beauty standards, family, immigration, mother-daughter relationships, and female relationships in general.
There's something quite beautiful, lush, and fluid about the way Mona Awad writes that made Rouge a very pleasant and at times funny and uncomfortable read.
It's a monster/horror tale with its own strong identity and aesthetic. Awad paints such a picture of repression that it can be suffocating to experience. I am still very much reeling over my thoughts on this one and I think I will be thinking about it for a loooong time.
What a strange, creepy, and wonderful novel.
